Simsciex Technologies Launches Groundbreaking ICT Training Program in the Northern Cape

Empowering the Next Generation of Tech Leaders through Innovation and Collaboration.

Johannesburg-  27 August , 2024 Simsciex Technologies, a pioneering force in broadband innovation, is thrilled to announce the succesful launch of its training program designed to empower the next generation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professionals in South Africa. In an exciting collaboration with Sol Plaatje University, this initiative will equip 25 talented students with the skills to design, develop, and maintain educational 3.0 websites.

“The Digital Futures fellowship program has been created to give students hands-on experience and practical skills, enabling them to make a significant impact in the tech industry. By nurturing the next generation of ICT leaders, we aim to drive innovation, economic growth, and social progress in South Africa. This initiative is about more than just education; it's about creating opportunities and fostering a future where technology drives positive change,” says Nomso Kana, CEO at Simsciex Technologies.

The fellowship program was officially launched this August at Sol Plaatje University, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between academia and industry.

“Our collaboration with stakeholders like MICTSETA,  ZADNA, and the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism demonstrate our commitment to creating meaningful industry connections,” Kana adds.

The program, aimed at second and third-year ICT students, selected fellows based on their academic merit, passion for technology, and potential for growth.

"This program is going to open up doors for me and shape my future. After listening to Nomso Kanas's presentation, I am aware of the underrepresentation of women in the industry, which can be a bit intimidating. However, I believe it is a challenge that is definitely doable with the right support and opportunities. This fellowship is a significant step towards overcoming those barriers,” says Kegomoditswe, one of the fellows, a third year ICT student.

The program aims to integrate academic learning with real-world industry experience, offering students the opportunity to engage directly with the ICT field.

The partnership with Simsciex Technologies is a tremendous opportunity for our students, as it allows them to gain practical work experience while continuing their studies. We were thrilled to receive the proposal from Simsciex Technologies because this program is truly unique and aligns perfectly with our commitment to providing our students with meaningful, real-world experiences. Through this initiative, our students will not only acquire in-depth knowledge in the ICT field but also develop essential skills,” says Mr Tumo Baitshenyetsi, Head of Department at the Faculty of Natural and Applied sciences at Sol Plaatje University.

This initiative is key because South Africa faces a significant shortage of ICT skills, with 70% of companies struggling to find qualified candidates, according to the World Economic Forum. Moreover, a study by the Department of Higher Education and Training reveals that only a limited number of graduates in South Africa pursue careers in computer science and related fields. This program therefore seeks to address this critical need by providing students with the expertise required to succeed in the ICT industry.

“There is an urgent need for skilled ICT professionals in our country. Our program directly addresses this gap by providing students with the expertise required to succeed in the industry. This isn't just about filling jobs; it's about empowering students to shape the future of technology in South Africa,” says Kana.

Participants will benefit from state-of-the-art resources, expert mentorship, and real-world project experience, building impressive portfolios that enhance their employability. For those not securing immediate employment, Simsciex Technologies and its partners offer pathways to success, reducing local unemployment rates.

The Digital Future fellowship program includes a unique focus on the rich history and cultural heritage of the Nama and Koi people in the Northern Cape province. Students will engage in digital tourism initiatives, highlighting historical significance and tourist attractions through virtual reality technology.

“Imagine showcasing our country's beauty through immersive virtual reality experiences. It's an incredible opportunity to highlight the Northern Cape's natural wonders and cultural richness to a global audience. This initiative not only preserves our heritage but also promotes tourism and economic development in the region,” says Kana.

Simsciex Technologies is committed to creating a brighter future for the nation's tech industry, one student at a time.
